Diversifying cropping sequence reduces nitrogen leaching risks

چکیده

Overuse of chemical fertiliser in cereal cropping systems has resulted severe degradation air and water quality. Diversifying sequence with legumes provides a natural source nitrogen (N), but also increases N leaching risks after their growing period. Here, we hypothesize that other break crops, i.e., crops grown to diversify the sequence, reduce at rotation scale due contribution increasing nutrient use efficiency crop recovery following crops. In two 4-year experiments conducted northern France, monitored agronomic performance changes soil mineral content field six preceding crop-current combinations including winter wheat (Triticum aestivum), pea (Pisum sativum L.) oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). We quantified each as function water-fluxes model based on content, climate data characteristics. then simulated scale, for 20 years conditions various management systems. show or reduced harvest cereals (up mean values −28 −19 kg ha−1 respectively), during compared wheat-wheat sequence. Although was higher cultivated, cumulative losses over four experimental sequences were not significantly than no-break sequences. Over years, pea, rape, volunteers catch by up 40 % monoculture. Our study confirms only depends current is affected crop. A large potential reduction could be achieved many intensive cereal-growing regions very limited diversity.

Achieving Lower Nitrogen Balance and Higher Nitrogen Recovery Efficiency Reduces Nitrous Oxide Emissions in North America's Maize Cropping Systems

Few studies have assessed the common, yet unproven, hypothesis that an increase of plant nitrogen (N) uptake and/or recovery efficiency (NRE) will reduce nitrous oxide (N2O) emission during crop production. Understanding the relationships between N2O emissions and crop N uptake and use efficiency parameters can help inform crop N management recommendations for both efficiency and environmental ...

Fertilizer vs. organic matter contributions to nitrogen leaching in cropping systems of the Pampas: N application in field lysimeters

Nitrogen (N) export from soils to streams and groundwater under the intensifying cropping schemes of the Pampas is modest compared to intensively cultivated basins of Europe and North America; however, a slow N enrichment of water resources has been suggested. We (1) analyzed the fate of fertilizer N and (2) evaluated the contribution of fertilizer and soil organic matter (SOM) to N leaching un...

Nitrogen Uptake and Leaching on Greens

Superintendents know that management of putting greens is an art. Greens are often made of high-porosity sand that does not retain water or nutrients very effectively. Also, putting green grasses are cut extremely short, which does not allow a deep root system to develop and take up nutrients from deep in the soil profile. Therefore, putting greens require frequent irrigation and fertilizer app...

Arbuscular Mycorrhizas Reduce Nitrogen Loss via Leaching

The capacity of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal root systems to reduce nitrate (NO₃⁻) and ammonium (NH₄⁺) loss from soils via leaching was investigated in a microcosm-based study. A mycorrhiza defective tomato mutant and its mycorrhizal wildtype progenitor were used in this experiment in order to avoid the indirect effects of establishing non-mycorrhizal control treatments on soil nitrogen cycl...
